Key takeaways
- UK ENIC asks for certified translations of qualification documents not in English, unless the Translation Waiver Service covers the language.
- The waiver is free for UNESCO languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish, and costs £49.20 for languages including German, Italian, Polish and Romanian.
- A standard Statement of Comparability costs £69.60 and can take 15 working days once ENIC has all documents and payment.
- Universities set their own rules; the University of Edinburgh accepts translations from the awarding institution, a non-UK sworn translator or an ITI Fellow or Member.
- Home Office caseworkers must not treat a translated award title as proof of its academic level.
International graduates moving to the UK often need their qualifications understood by a university, an employer, a professional body or the Home Office. If the certificates and transcripts are not in English, a translation is usually the first step.
This article explains what UK ENIC, universities and the Home Office ask for, when UK ENIC’s Translation Waiver Service is an alternative, and how to prepare academic documents for translation. It sits within our guide to certified translation in the UK.
Does UK ENIC need certified translations of degree certificates?
Yes, unless your language is covered by the Translation Waiver Service. UK ENIC is the UK’s national agency for recognising international qualifications, and its Statement of Comparability compares a foreign qualification with UK levels.
UK ENIC’s documents page says applicants must upload final certificates, official transcripts and “certified translations if your documents are not in English”. Its Translation Waiver Service page explains who may translate:
“UK ENIC accepts certified translations from professional translators, if your language is not covered by the Translation Waiver Service.” — UK ENIC
What is the UK ENIC Translation Waiver Service?
The Translation Waiver Service lets you submit qualifications in their original language for a Statement of Comparability, so you do not need to commission a translation for the languages it covers. UK ENIC does not provide translations as part of the service.
The cost depends on the language, as the table below shows. Figures are from UK ENIC’s cost page, waiver page and Fast Track Service page.
| Language group | Waiver fee | Total for a standard Statement | Translation needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| UNESCO languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish | No charge | £69.60 | No, if you use the waiver |
| Catalan, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Romanian and Ukrainian | £49.20, or free with Fast Track | £118.80 | No, if you use the waiver |
| All other languages | Waiver not available | £69.60 | Yes, a certified translation |
The standard service “can take 15 working days” once UK ENIC has all documents and payment. The Fast Track Service costs £223.20 for 2 working days or £284.40 for 1 working day, and includes the waiver where applicable. Remember that the waiver applies only to the Statement of Comparability: a university or employer may still want its own translation.
What do UK universities require?
Each university sets its own requirements, and some restrict who may translate. The University of Edinburgh’s postgraduate guidance on certified translations accepts translations from the awarding institution, a translator sworn before a court outside the UK, or a Fellow or Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).
Where the awarding institution did not make the translation, Edinburgh also asks for an accuracy confirmation, the date, the translator’s full name and signature, and contact details. Other universities may differ, so read the admissions page for each course before ordering.
Do you need translated qualifications for a UK student or work visa?
Sometimes. The Home Office’s Student caseworker guidance says documents used to obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) need a certified translation if they are not in English. Applicants for degree-level courses at a higher education provider do not need to provide evidence of the qualifications used to obtain their offer.
The same guidance contains a useful warning about what a translation can prove:
“If a translation of an overseas qualification or certificate is submitted, the caseworker must not take it as a direct translation of the academic level of the award.” — Home Office, Student and Child Student caseworker guidance
In other words, the translation shows what the document says; recognition of its level is a separate step. The general Home Office format is covered in Home Office translation requirements.
How to prepare academic documents for translation: step by step
Transcripts are dense, so preparation saves both cost and queries. Follow these steps.
- Check whether UK ENIC’s waiver covers your language before ordering anything for a Statement of Comparability.
- Collect the final certificate and the full official transcript, signed and dated by the awarding institution.
- Include any diploma supplement or grading-scale explanation issued by the university.
- Provide the official English name of the institution, if it has one.
- Send clear colour scans of every page; UK ENIC itself asks for images with all four corners visible.
- Tell the translator which body will receive the translation, so the certification meets its rules.
Common mistakes with degree and transcript translations
Academic translations fail more often on presentation than on language.
- “Converting” grades. A translator should reproduce the original grades and scale, not convert them to UK classifications.
- Translating degree titles as UK equivalents. Rendering a foreign title as “Master’s” or “Bachelor’s” can mislead; a literal rendering with the original in brackets is safer.
- Skipping course codes and credit columns. These help evaluators judge workload.
- Paying for a translation ENIC would have waived. Check the waiver list first.
- Ignoring the university’s own translator rules. Some accept only specific categories of translator.
